From the deep roots to the flowers of contemporary art:
Butoh, theater, contemporary dance, voice and performance.

As a starting point, the idea of the Anthropophagic Brazilian Culture is the ground
to assimilate, devour and digest the Japanese Butoh Dance in order to express what
could be a Contemporary Brazilian Butoh Dance. Digesting foundational points of
the Butoh Dance by Tatsumi Hijikata, the research tries to find analogous points in
Brazilian Art and Culture to develop training, rehearsal and performance
methodologies for this hybrid and intercultural dance.

Butoh Dance X Brazilian afro-indigenous ritual dance; Shinto X Perspectivismo
Ameríndio; Butoh Notation X Dança dos Orixás; Japanese Avant-garde Art X Brazilian
Modern and Contemporary Art are some points of encounter, intersection and
crossing analyzed in theory and dance. The Butoh of Tatsumi Hijikata, the dance of
Kazuo and Yoshito Ohno, the Jinen Butoh of Atsushi Takenouchi and the Taanteatro
of Maura Baiocci are bases for thinking this research.

Since 2007, the artist Willian Lopes has been researching meeting points and
intersection of Japanese Butoh Dance and Brazilian Ritual Dances in his personal
performances. In June 2018, in Brasilia/Brazil, he taught his first workshops and an
artistic residence of 15 days, where he could share and make a first exploration into

the idea of Brazilian Butoh Dance. Decolonial corporal processes, cultural re-
integration, ancestry x contemporaneity, identity x austerity, public art and urban

intervention were some of the points that came to the surface through the body in
these experiences.
